August Farmer's Market
Carving out time to attend our local Farmers Market has become a Sunday morning ritual! Want to know what to buy in the summer months in California, and what the benefits are of shopping at your local market? Read on!
This time we took our camera along to capture the colors, vendors and puppies we came across. Our local market never disappoints and serves as a reminder to express our gratitude for the bounty our northern California farmers provide each season. We love seeing the variety of people that gather at these markets to play music, sell goods or meander the stalls, tasting samples with their families. This Sunday ritual piques our culinary creativity each time and we hope to inspire you to visit your local market this week wherever in the Bay Area you may be. And if you’re reading this outside of the Bay - Google your local farmers market now! (Any Seattleites out there? The Ballard Market is one of our favs!)
3 Benefits of shopping at your farmers market:
Eating locally supports growers in your community and keeps the environmental footprint for the products you buy low.
Eating seasonally means that you are getting the most nutritious foods available because farmers typically harvest what they are going to sell at its peak nutritious state and bring it to market the next day. This ensures the produce does not lose as many nutrients as those which travel for several weeks from far away and await distribution in a warehouse somewhere.
Saving money is possible at the farmer’s market despite its reputation for being expensive. Go towards the end of the day when venders often offer deals. Be sure to walk through all the stalls and compare prices as they can vary greatly.
In season for August: look for tomatoes, peppers, melons, peaches and herbs.
